A deeply researched and beautifully illustrated study of saxophone legend John Coltrane’s signature album. So, at grave risk of bodily harm, I come not to bury jazz but to praise it—at least one of its practitioners, John Coltrane, supreme master of the saxophone. They both project a spiritual serenity and inner peace that belies the turbulence that would enter his music the following year. A Love Supreme is a through-composed suite with four parts: "Acknowledgement" (which includes the oral chant that gives the album its name), "Resolution", "Pursuance", and "Psalm". In particular, I submit A Love Supreme for your consideration. It was a pivotal year: he left the Davis quintet and performed and recorded with Monk. Coltrane plays tenor saxophone on all parts. Among the images published here for the first time are Coltrane’s hand-written poem ‘A Love Supreme’ that was printed in the original album and in-studio photographs of Coltrane and his sidemen recording A Love Supreme in 1964. Coltrane was at the peak of his popularity when A Love Supreme was released. The title poem from that book begins with the epigraph “a love supreme, a love supreme.” Though not recorded until 1964, A Love Supreme germinated from Coltrane’s spiritual and physical cleansing in 1957. Original introduction written by John Coltrane, a brief essay written in 1995 by Michael Cuscuna, and the poem "A Love Supreme" by Coltrane printed therein. Side B … Unbeknownst to many, Coltrane actually sounded out the words through his horn, placing the handwritten poem on a music stand in front of him, and playing it as if it were music. A Love Supreme is Coltrane’s love poem to God; Harper’s poem is to Coltrane. One important difference remains, however: while Coltrane’s art is inspired by the transcendence of God, Harper’s poem, for all its hiddenness, springs out of particulars, the flesh, the events of Coltrane’s life, a decidedly un-gnostic source of inspiration. John Coltrane recorded only two albums in 1964, the sublime and very overlooked Crescent and the recognized masterpiece A Love Supreme. That was the day that I decided I had to write about Coltrane.
